How can I add joy to my husband’s life? Our Called to be a Keeper Bible study was in Week Four, Called to Love, when I remembered the thoughtful and sweet way that my grandmother always welcomed my grandpa when he came home from work. She called it happy time (maybe a takeoff on happy hour or just a gentle reminder of the attitude she hoped would be always present at his homecoming!)

As a child on my yearly visit to their Iowa home, I was able to witness and participate in this special tradition in which Grandma would greet Grandpa with a kiss and they would sit down on the sofa in the living room to enjoy a simple appetizer and drink that she had prepared. They would discuss their day and enjoy the refreshments and then Grandma would go finish the dinner while Grandpa would change his clothes and read the paper. It was a simple but thoughtful gesture that said, I have missed you and want to spend time with you…you are important to me!

The appetizer was always simple: cheese and crackers, a bowl of goldfish crackers, some chips and salsa. It was thoughtfulness and love that made that time so happy and set the tone for a pleasant evening. Why not try happy time in your home and let us know if your husband responded as mine did: he loved it!
