…you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold…but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. I Peter 1:18-19
You have special blood, the blood bank worker told me as she prepared to draw my blood. That’s probably what they tell everyone! I thought to myself as she inserted the needle into my vein. I had received a notice that the blood bank was low on blood and thought I would do my humanitarian duty and give.
Well, it turns out I do have special blood. My blood type (O-) is the universal donor which means that anyone in the world, no matter what their blood type, can receive my blood. Additionally, I found out that my blood tested negative to a virus that is sometimes present in blood, so my blood can be given to babies and transplant patients. This news gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside and I decided that I ought to give more often than once a decade, which had been my previous frequency!
As I sat waiting for the bag to fill, I thought of the sweet, innocent little baby that this blood might save. Then the thought occurred to me, Would I be so happy if I knew that this blood was going to a rapist, murderer, or thief? Warm, fuzzy feeling gone.
But that is why I gave My blood, I could almost hear Jesus whisper in my mind. Yes, I thought, Jesus truly is the Universal Blood Donor. His blood, given not by a painless transfusion but by His excruciating death on a cross, gives eternal life and is available to all … even the worst of sinners, and really we are all in critical condition spiritually, in fact the Bible says we are spiritually dead apart from Jesus Christ.
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace. Ephesians 1:7
Warm, fuzzy feeling back! This is the good news of Easter! Jesus, who never sinned, took our sin upon Himself when He died on the cross. Easter morning when He arose, He conquered sin and death and provided a way for us to be forgiven and have eternal life with Him.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even while we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast Ephesians 3:4-9 (emphasis mine).
Thank you, Jesus, for giving your precious blood for me!
Have you received the gift of eternal life that God offers to all? If you have, I invite you this Easter season to share that Good News with others.
