Happy Birthday to Jesus (Cake) & Merry Christmas to you!

Happy Birthday to Jesus (Cake) & Merry Christmas to you!

With Christmas only a few days away we wanted to share an idea that we hope will be a resource to you as you help the children in your life focus on the birth of our Savior.

Many years ago I started something in our family to celebrate the actual birthday of Jesus. This quickly became a tradition in our family and the Lord opened doors of opportunity to share this with friends, family, and with my children’s classes at school. I have expanded upon the idea by adding Scripture and scripting below what I would share. The following is a description of the cake and how to make it.

The bottom layer represents the sin in our life. The middle layer represents Christ’s shed blood. The top layer represents our growth in Christ. The flavors of cake mix that work best are: Chocolate fudge, strawberry (you can add red food coloring to make it a true red) and pistachio. If pistachio is not available then use a white cake mix and add a box of pistachio instant pudding and some green food coloring as you mix the cake together. I recommend baking each of these cakes in 9” cake pans. White icing is used between each layer and over all the cake. I used containers of pre-made frosting. The cake is topped with a single candle. A large candle stick works well and this serves as a reminder of our role of being a light of His love in the world.

Since you only need one layer from each flavor of cake made, this recipe will give you two complete cakes. I usually made them ahead of time and would then freeze them. You could use one during the month of December or share it with a friend to use; and the other on Christmas Eve or Christmas day. Below is the explanation and Scriptures that I would read when I shared this cake with children. Have fun with it and I pray that God opens doors for you to use it to spread the message of hope each year!

Blessings,
Lori Merrill

"This is a birthday cake for Jesus.  This cake is very unique because of Who it is for and because we cut it before we sing.  This cake has a very special meaning.  (Cut a piece to put on a plate so that the colors can be seen) First of all, we have three different colors and each color represents something different.  Let’s look at the bottom layer first. It is dark, almost black. This layer represents the sin we have in our lives.  Before I came to know Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, I was a sinner and a slave to sin.  (Romans 3:23)

The middle layer is red. The red layer represents the blood of Jesus.  You see, God sent His Son Jesus, to be our Savior.  Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that you and I could live in heaven someday.  All we have to do is to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died on the cross for our sins and ask Him to be the Lord of our life.  (John 3:15-17)  This layer represents the blood that Jesus shed for you and me.

The third layer is green. The green represents the new life and growth we have and experience as we spend time with Him in His Word (Bible) and in prayer.  The more we spend time with Him the more we become like Him and we experience wonderful growth as a person.  (2 Cor. 5:17)

Now let me tell you about the white icing. The cake is covered in white icing because it reminds us of how He cleanses us of our sin and makes us white as snow. When we accept Him as our Savior we are truly a new person.

There is one single candle on top of the cake because (light the candle) as a new creation in Christ; we are to be a light into the dark world.  (Matt. 5:16) We are to shine brightly for Him by being an example of His love.  The Bible tells us that we are to live in the world, but not to be of the world. The people in the world should be able to look at us and see us as a bright light that points them to Christ, His love and His message of hope."

Close by singing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus and closing with a quick prayer of thanks to God for the gift of His Son.
