Here I Am!
We are in training mode with our dogs. We were desperate for help so we hired a trainer. It has helped and often, but certainly not always, when we call them by name they look at us like this:
I think they are adorable when they look at me like this. Not so adorable when they ignore me!
It has made me wonder about us and our relationship to God. Stick with me here. There are many examples in God’s Word where He spoke to one of His children (even though they were adults) and their response was, “Here I am”. Here is a sampling:
- But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Genesis 22:11
- Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, “Jacob,” and I said, “Here I am.” Genesis 31:11
- The Lord called Samuel; and he said, “Here I am.” 1 Samuel 3:4
It is obvious when you read the stories of Abraham, Jacob and Samuel that they were attuned to God’s voice. Just as I want for my dogs to do this for me; how much more do I want to do this for my Heavenly Father. I desire to be so in tune with the Holy Spirit that when I hear God speak I immediately stand at attention, say, “Here I am.” and then obey.
What a precious gift of gratitude and love this can be to our God. Let’s ask the Lord to help us to stand at attention when He speaks and to be able to quickly respond, “Here I am!” Then let’s wait with this same look of longing concerning our next step. When we do, our God is faithful to show us exactly what that next step is!
