Parenting Principle #1 -A Keeper Stands Guard

Posted by Lori Merrill on 04/12/2018

As mothers we would never permit someone dangerous to come into our home. We wouldn’t knowingly allow a bad example to have full access to our children. We would be hesitant to allow filthy talking teens to have an influence on our own teenagers. Nor would we encourage our young adults to live with those that defy everything about our Savior.

Bottom line, when it comes to protecting our children we have no problem being a momma bear. So, why is it that we can easily forget how much we need to protect what goes into their minds via their eyes and ears?

Proverbs 4:23 states, Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.

Prior to our children being able to do this for themselves we should be in a constant state of training them. Some of the best ways for us to do this as a mom is:

1. Teach them to be wise with what they expose themselves to, teaching them that what they are exposed to, the Holy Spirit within them will be exposed to as well.

2. Teach them to have discernment. Teach them that if it isn’t pleasing to the Lord then it isn’t meant to be devoured—mind, body or soul.

Both of these things happen through conversation and lots of it. Let’s be protective moms, but not over protective moms.

And last…be an example to them. Live a life that shows you are careful with what you watch, what you listen to and what you read and what you expose yourself to. This, my friend, is the best way to teach…by example.

In His Love,
Lori
