Prayers for the Prodigal

Posted by Lori Merrill on 10/19/2018

We all know someone who has strayed from God—thinking their own ways, are much better than His. Whether it is a child of your own (like the story in Luke), a friend’s child, or your very own friend or family member, it is painful for sure. Prayer is the only response I know with certainty can’t be a wrong choice during this difficult season. I hope you sense God’s direction & comfort through these prayers that I have found myself praying again and again:

Dear Lord:
• Open their eyes to their desperate need for You. (Psalms 119:18)
• Give them an insatiable hunger & thirst for Your righteousness. (Matthew 6:33)
• Put a person or people of influence in their life, who is not only sold out to You, but those whom they respect and admire. (Proverbs 15:22)
• Make them see that their deepest need is met in You alone and not in the things of this world. (Psalms 71:5)
• Break them of their pride of self-sufficiency. (Proverbs 18:12 & Romans 7:18)
• Give them clarity to see that life lived against Your commands is a life full of misery. (Psalms 119:44 & Psalms 63:4)
• Increase their faith as You squelch the lies of the enemy. (Mark 9:24 & Philippians 4:8)
• Allow what You must into their lives (while protecting them against irreparable harm) so they bow their knees and cry out for You. (Isaiah 25:1)

And finally Lord, I ask that You close my mouth unless it is with a no-doubt-in-my-mind confirmation that You want me to speak and then may I be like Your Son, and speak only words that are laced in love and grace. I ask Lord, that You swaddle this prodigal with Your love, peace and grace so they are reminded of what it feels like to walk with You. Amen.

In His Love,
