Setting Goals: 4 Areas
For years I failed with New Year’s resolutions. I made lists of areas to improve: patience, exercise, healthy eating. But life kicked in and with that came frustration. Instead I found success by writing yearly goals in four areas: physical, mental, social, and spiritual.
#1 Physical- For years I didn’t get enough sleep. I learned I am a nicer wife, mother, daughter, and friend when I have more sleep. This year I want to go to bed earlier and sleep more each night.
#2 Mental- When my children were home I read non-fiction: child training, nutrition, marriage, and Christian growth. As an empty nester now I have time to be in a classical book club. By the end of this year, I want to be comfortable with the British authors: Jane Austin, the Bronte sisters, George MacDonald, and Charles Dickens.
#3 Social- After praying about this the Lord led me to “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…” Ephesians 4:29. In the past I have worked on this, but in 2019 I am committed to being intentional and meditate on this verse and others related to controlling my tongue. I pray my social interactions reflect this Christ-like attitude.
#4 Spiritual- For 2019 my spiritual goal is to read and study five books of the Bible I have not studied before. I found John MacArthur’s study guides Unleashing God’s Truth One Verse at a Time. I am excited to dig deeper into the scriptures starting with 1 Peter.
Do your New Year’s resolutions turn to frustration? Pray for wisdom as you set specific goals in these four areas and remember- “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
