What Does Humility Have to Do With Marriage?

Posted by Lori Merrill on 02/22/2018

For me to serve my husband and love him unconditionally, I must humble myself before the Lord and put Him before my husband. Think about how the practice of humility could improve any marriage.

Pride doesn't improve relationships, but harms them. I have to be willing to ask the Lord to help both Steve and me in this difficult area of humility.

Here are a few verses about humility to help us focus on His Word:

“But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, ‘God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’” James 4:6

“Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” James 4:10

“Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7

“When pride comes, then comes dishonor, but with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2

“A man’s pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor.” Proverbs 29:23

Lord, these verses help us to see how important the practice of humility is to You and how beneficial it is in marriage. Please strengthen us to be mindful of our daily need for humility, especially in our marriage. Amen.

In His Love,
